Admissions updates
Admissions updates Early Action updates Please continue to be patient with the application tracking system. We are receiving buckets and buckets and buckets of mail to open and process, and we are doing so as quickly as possible. Please do not harass your teachers or counselors if you dont yet see a recommendation on the application tracking system. Allow two weeks from submission date for documents to show up in the tracking system this means there may still be documents mailed in late October that have not yet been processed. When we are up-to-date with mail processing, we will let you know on the blogs. Until that time, relax. Dont worry about the Mid-Year Grade Report until January, unless youre on a trimester system. I dont yet know on what date we will release early action decisions. We have in the past preferred to release decisions on a Saturday; December 13 or December 20 would be the likely dates, but it could be any day in December. We have not yet made that determination, and any speculation on specific dates for decisions would be just that speculation. I promise you that as soon as we know what day decisions will be released, we will let you know. A few leftover questions from the EA deadline: we will not be enforcing a hard cutoff at the deadline for this years early action; no need to worry if you clicked submit a bit after midnight, you will still be considered for early action. Also, we have said that we will be flexible with word limits and with essay formatting; if the online submission was badly misformatted, you can mail in a correctly formatted version. Regular Action updates The deadline to schedule your interview if you are applying for Regular Action is December 10. If you havent yet contacted your Educational Counselor (interviewer, or EC), I recommend you do so very soon (right now is a great time)! You can find your Educational Counselors name and contact information on your MyMIT page. Note that this deadline is before many ED/EA schools release their decisions, so if there is a chance you will be applying to MIT, I recommend you go ahead and have your interview now. January is the last month for Regular Action applicants to take required standardized tests. There are a number of options to fulfill the stardardized test requirements, including the ACT and the TOEFL, but if you will be taking the SAT Reasoning Test or SAT Subject Tests, remember that the late registration deadline for December is one week from today, and that the January registration deadline is December 26. If you take the January test, you must list MIT as a school to receive your scores. And, of course, January 1 is our postmark and online submission deadline to apply for Regular Action. Updates for Applicants from India China Outside of the United States, India and China are our largest applicant countries (which makes sense, since these are the worlds most populous countries). I have a few updated notes for applicants in these countries. For applicants from India: You must submit your Part 1 (the Biographical Information Form) before having an interview. The Part 1 is not very time consuming, as it does not require any essays, but does require that students either pay the application fee of US$65 or obtain a fee waiver. Fee waivers may be obtained from a students guidance counselor or school official and are available to domestic and international students. For applicants from China: We have added new high schools to our high school database. These high schools are not included in the College Board list of CEEB codes and may not be choices in other schools drop-down menus, so be sure to review all of these choices in the high school list from China before clicking the I cannot find my school button. Also for applicants from China, please note that interview assignments will be changing soon. Due to the large number of applicants in China, we will not be able to offer an interview to every student in China; many students interviews will be waived, as they are in other countries where we do not have sufficient interview coverage. If the admissions committee needs more information on a student with a waived interview, we will not hesitate to contact you and perhaps do an interview at a later date. We will release decisions at decisions.mit.edu on Saturday, March 18 at 12 noon, Eastern Standard Time. Theres not much to add beyond what youve already read elsewhere, but I do want to strongly encourage you to use the verification functionality at decisions.mit.edu as soon as possible to ensure that you know your MyMIT username and password, because if you dont know it when you go to check on the 18th, there will be no way to find out. As for the postal mailing, we still do not have a definitive date and time when letters will be mailed, but it will be around the same time as the decisions are posted online. Because of the amount of material that will be sent, admitted students should expect a large envelope and not a tube. Students not admitted will receive a standard business-sized envelope. In other admissions-related news, MIT has announced that we will match federal Pell Grants (FAQs, New York Times story). A Pell Grant is a need-based scholarship provided by the federal government to support education in low-income families. Im proud of MITs leadership on this issue, and its continued commitment to need-based financial aid. I, for one, could not have attended MIT without its generous need-based financial aid. Meanwhile, we continue moving towards the final selections of the Class of 2010. Were getting there. Today, much of the staff was out of the office reading international applications, which is a nice change of pace from domestic applications. It seems that this will be the most competitive year ever for MIT admissions, both for US and international applicants. Well release numbers when we can. In the mean time, were not thinking so much about numbers as we are people: the students that will shape and bring life to the MIT Class of 2010.

It faces competitive rivalry from other high-end car producers; however, since it produces cars in a small quantity, these are highly sought after and are not threatened by substitutes. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!â⬠(Carroll, 1941) This contention put forth by the Red Queen led to the development of the Red Queen hypothesis (also referred to as Red Queenââ¬â¢s Race or Red Queenââ¬â¢s Effect) which emphasizes upon the need of an organism to constantly adapt, evolve and propagate not just to gain a reproductive advantage over other organisms but also to survive in a constantly changing and opposing environment (Van Valen, 1973). Van Valen (1973) elaborates this principle and asserts that in an evolutionary system, an organization needs continuous developments to sustain its fitness ââ¬Å"relative to the system in which it co-evolvesâ⬠. The red queen principle is widely applied in evolutionary sciences in the field of biology. Some economists also apply this phenomenon to the evolutionary process of economies, wherein business entities operating in the market act in the same way as organisms in their environment. Horizontal diversification occurs when a company enters in a new business which falls within the same industry and employs the exact same value chain as of its core business. McLaren has so far not diversified horizontally as it has neither acquired nor merged with any other formula one racing team, which is its core business. Fig.1 Vertical Diversification Vertical diversification occurs when a firm enters into a business which shares a common industry; however, the value chain differs (Charles et, al. 2010). McLaren underwent vertical diversification through the establishment of its automotive business. In its formative years, McLaren built several cars including formula two, hillclimbing, formula 5000 and sports cars that were sold to customers. McLaren contracted Trojan to built customer versions of several McLarenââ¬â¢s race cars. Finally in 1992, McLaren ventured into the mass car market by offering a slightly varied version of its formula one racing car called McLaren F1 supercar to the consumer market. Later it produced the iconic Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren in collaboration with Mercedes (William, 2009). The company has developed a high tech automotive production plant for manufacturing high end consumer cars. McLaren Automotive has established itself as a global brand and is currently pursuing the production of new MP4-12C ca r. Similarly, McLarenââ¬â¢s establishment of its electronic systems business, which produces high-end electronics control unit (ECU) for teams racing on the formula one circuit, also qualifies for vertical diversification. Through this business, McLaren creates advanced race telemetry and sensory devices for formula one racing team. This business operates within the same industry as McLaren core business, but it engages an entirely different production, distribution and customer network (McLaren, 2013). Cross Sector Diversification Cross sector diversification occurs when a firm enters into business within a different industry which has a similar value chain as of its core business (Charles et, al. 2010). McLaren also ventured into cross sector diversification by entering into a marketing and advertising business. Similarly, its venturing into the event management and hospitality industry also qualifies for cross sector diversification. Both these businesses share the same value chain as of McLarenââ¬â¢s core racing business to some extent in that they both cater the internal demands of McLaren Group and serve its own customers. McLaren marketing overlooks the groupââ¬â¢s marketing activities apart from operating as a separate entity while Absolute Taste (McLarenââ¬â¢s hospitality and event management business) caters the Groupââ¬â¢s customer at formula one event along with serving other high-end customers globally. Unrelated Diversification Unrelated diversification occurs when a firm enters into a new business in a different industry than that of its primary business through which it does not aim to achieve any value chain synergies (Charles et, al. 2010). McLaren, diversification into applied technologies can be categorized as unrelated diversification in that this business engages an entirely different value chain in terms of suppliers, production, and customers. This business involves developing groundbreaking technologies for the field of sport, medicine, biomechanics and entertainment (McLaren, 2013). It is worthy to note that this business does benefit from McLarenââ¬â¢s overall technical know-how in providing improved technological systems and solutions and therefore it cannot be definitely termed as unrelated diversification. Historical Perspective on Corporate Diversification From 1950s to 1970s There was an era when there were only a few companies selling similar products within a particular market, while the demands of the customers were relatively simple and less sophisticated. At that time, the phenomenon of strategic management was neither popular nor deemed a critical element for business success. This was the case throughout the first half of the 20th century (Orcullo, 2007). In the following two decades, there was an emphasis upon several principles of management, which were deemed equally applicable across various industries and businesses. Throughout 1960s and 1970s, the simple faith in general management skills justified virtuous circle of corporate growth and diversification. Robert Katz noted in that regard that: ââ¬Å"We are all familiar with those ââ¬Ëprofessional managersââ¬â¢ who are becoming the prototypes of our modern executive world. These men shift with great ease and with no apparent loss in effectiveness, from one industry to another. Their hum an and conceptual skills seem to make up for their unfamiliarity with the new jobââ¬â¢s technical aspects.â⬠(Goold and Luchs, 1993) Hence, during 1950s and 1960s, it was widely opined that any business with a relatively effective management could venture into any other related or un-related business solely based upon its managerial resources. Throughout this period, McLaren was simply focused upon its primary business of formula one racing. From 1970s to 1980s According to Orcullo (2007), the notion of strategic management only became popular and well known after the 1970s. Strategic positioning and market competition implied that firms were now under increasing pressure to grow and diversify in order to sustain and thrive in the changing business environment. Concurrently, there was a realization during 1970s and 1980s that different businesses had to be managed differently (Goold and Luchs, 1993). This view encouraged businesses to undergo main related-horizontal diversification so that a firmââ¬â¢s new undertakings may share the exact sources of synergies such as market, operational and management fit. At this time, McLaren strategized to expand into mass car market which closely shared the sources of synergies with McLarenââ¬â¢s racing team. 1990s and Onwards During the late 1980s and 1990s, management literature introduced new themes such as core competencies and management dominant logic view and business synergies. These themes further emphasized on achieving synergy through diversification and venturing into businesses which were directly or indirectly related to the core competencies and fell within the dominant management logic of the company (Goold and Luchs, 1993). Coinciding to these corresponding business views, McLaren was expanding in some of its current businesses during this time which are all either directly or indirectly related to its core competencies and create synergy for the McLaren Group. Julius Caesar was a strong leader for the Romans who changed the course of the history of the Greco - Roman world decisively and irreversibly. With his courage and strength he created a strong empire. What happened during his early political career? How did he become such a strong dictator of the Roman Empire? What events led up to the making of the first triumvirate? How did he rise over the other two in the triumvirate and why did he choose to take over? What happened during his reign as dictator of Rome? What events led up to the assassination of Caesar? What happened after he was killed? Caesar was a major part of the Roman Empire because of his strength and his strong war strategies. Julius Caesar was a Roman general and statesman whose dictatorship was pivotal in Romes transition from republic to empire. When he was young Caesar lived through one of the most horrifying decades in the history of the city of Rome. The city was assaulted twice and captured by Roman armies, first in 87 BC by the leaders of the populares, his uncle Marius and Cinna. Cinna was killed the year that Caesar had married Cinnas daughter Cornelia. The second attack upon the city was carried our by Marius enemy Sulla, leader of the optimates, in 82 BC on the latters return from the East. On each occasion the massacre of political opponents was followed by the confiscation of their property. The proscriptions of Sulla, which preceded the reactionary political legislation enacted during his dictatorship left a particularly bitter memory that long survived. Caesar left Rome for the province of Asia on the condition that he divorce his wife because Sulla would only allow him to leave on that condition. When he heard the news that Sulla had been killed he returned to Rome. He studied rhetoric under the distinguished teacher Molon. In the winter of 75-74 BC Caesar was captured by pirated and, while in their custody awaiting the arrival of the ransom money which they demanded, threatened them with crucifixion , a threat which he fulfilled immediately after his release. He then returned to Rome to engage in a normal political career, starting with the quaetorship which he served in 69-68 BC in the province of Further Spain. In the Roman political world of the sixties the dominance of the optimates was challenged by Pompey and Crassus. The optimates, led by Quintus Lutatius Catulus and Lucius Licinius Lucullus , were chiefly men whose careers had been made by Sulla. Pompey and Crassus were consuls in 70 BC and had rescinded the most offensively reactionary measures of Sullas legislation. During Pompeys absence from 67 to 62 BC during his campaigns against the Mediterranean pirates, Mithridates, and Crassus, his jealous rival. Caesar married Ponpeia after Cornelias death and was appointed aedile in 65 BC As aedile, Caesar returned to Marius trophies to their former place of honor in the Capitol, thus laying claim to leadership of the populares. When Caesar was a praetor, he supported a tribune who wanted Pompey recalled to restore order in Rome. As a result, Caesar was suspended from office for a period and antagonized Catulus. Before leaving Rome to govern Further Spain for a year, Caesar divorced his wife Pompeia because of the allegation that she had been implicated in the offense of Publius Clodius. The latter was then awaiting trial for breaking into Caesars house the previous December disguised as a woman at the festival of the Bona Dea, which no man is allowed to attend. After his return from a successful year administrating Spain Caesar was elected consul for 59 BC through political alliance with Pompey and Crassus . This alliance was called the first triumvirate. Caesars purpose was to gain a big military command. Pompey for his part sought the ratification of his Eastern settlement and land allotments for his discharged troops. Crassus sought a revision of the contract for collecting taxes in the province of Asia. An agrarian bill authorizing the purchase of land for Pompeys veterans was passed in January of 59 BC at a disorderly public assembly which Caesars fellow consul Calpurnius Bibulus, was thrown from the platform and his consular insignia were broken. Bibulus tried to stop Caesar and his supporters from passing any further law but was only able to postpone the creation of the new laws by saying that the skies would not permit it because there was stormy weather and they were very superstitious. Caesar disregarded Bibulus behavior and the remainder of the legislative program of the triumvirate was carried through. As a

Geology of the Appalachian Mountains The Appalachian Mountain range is one of the oldest continental mountain systems in the world. The tallest mountain in the range is the 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell, located in North Carolina. Compared with the Rocky Mountains of western North America, which have 50 plus peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation, the Appalachians are rather modest in height. At their tallest, however, they rose to Himalayan-scale heights before being weathered and eroded down over the past ~200 million years. A Physiographic Overview The Appalachian Mountains trend southwest to northeast from central Alabama all the way to Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Along this 1,500-mile path, the system is split up into 7 different physiographic provincesà thatà contain distinct geologic backgrounds. In the southern section, the Appalachian Plateau and Valley and Ridge provinces make up the western border of the system and are composed of sedimentary rocks like sandstone, limestone, and shale. To the east lie the Blue Ridge Mountains and Piedmont, composed primarily of metamorphic and igneous rocks.à In some areas, like Red Top Mountain in northern Georgia or Blowing Rock in northern North Carolina, the rock has eroded down to where one can see basement rocks that formed over a billion years ago during the Grenville Orogeny.à The northern Appalachians are made up of two parts: the St. Lawrence Valley, a small region defined by the St. Lawrence River and St. Lawrence rift system, and the New England province, which formed hundreds of millions of years ago and owes much of its present topography to recent glacial episodes. Geologically speaking, the Adirondack Mountains are quite different than the Appalachian Mountains; however, they are included by the USGS in the Appalachian Highland region.à Geologic History To a geologist, the rocks of the Appalachian Mountains reveal a billion-year story of violent continental collisions and the subsequent mountain building, erosion, deposition and/or volcanism that came with. The geologic history of the area is complex but can be broken down into four major orogenies, or mountain building events. It is important to remember that between each of these orogenies, millions of years of weathering and erosion wore the mountains down and deposited sediment in the surrounding areas. This sediment was often subjected to intense heat and pressure as the mountains were uplifted again during the next orogeny.à Grenville Orogeny: This mountain-building event occurred around 1 billion years ago, creating the supercontinent Rodinia. The collision formed tall mountains along with the igneous and metamorphic rocks that make up the very core of the Appalachians. The supercontinent began to break apart around 750 million years ago and by 540 million years ago, an ocean (the Iapetus Ocean) existed between the paleocontinents.à Taconic Orogeny: Approximately 460 million years ago, as the Iapetus Ocean was closing, a volcanic island arc chain collided with the North American Craton.à The remnants of these mountains can still be seen in the Taconic Range of New York.Acadian Orogeny: Starting 375 million years ago, this mountain-building episode occurred as the Avalonian terrane collided with the North American Craton. The collision did not happen head on, as it struck the northern section of the protocontinent and then slowly moved southward. Index minerals show us that the Avalonian terrane stru ck the North American craton at different times and with different collisional forces. Alleghanian Orogeny: This event (sometimes referred to as the Appalachian orogeny) formed the supercontinent Pangea ~325 million years ago. The ancestral North American and African continents collided, forming Himalayan-scaled mountain chains known as the Central Pangean Mountains. The modern-day Anti-Atlas Mountains of northwestern Africa were part of this chain. The mountain building ended some 265 million years ago, and the ancestral North American and African continents began drifting apart ~200 million years ago (and continue to do so to this day). The Appalachians have weathered and eroded away over the past hundreds of millions of years, leaving only remnants of the mountain system that once reached record heights. The strata of the Atlantic Coastal Plain are made up of sediment from their weathering, transportation, and deposition.

Biography of Karl Marx Karl Heinrich Marx was a German philosopher, social scientist, and revolutionist whose writings formed the beginning of the basic ideas known as Marxism. Although he was largely disregarded by scholars in his own lifetime, his social, economic and political ideas gained rapid acceptance in the socialist movement after his death. With the help of Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx created much of the theory of socialism and communism that we know today. Karl Marx was born in Trier, Germany, on May 5, 1818 to Hirshel and Henrietta Marx. Hirshel Marx was a Jewish lawyer and in order to escape anti-Semitism, he chose to abandon his Jewish faith when Karl was only six years old. Even though the majority of people living in Trier were Catholics, Hirshel Marx decided to become a Protestant. The family converted to Protestantism in 18241. After graduating from the Friedrich-William Gymnasium High School in Trier, Marx entered Bonn University where he studied law and majored in history and philosophy2. He planned to follow his father and become a lawyerââ¬âhowever he soon transferred to the more serious University of Berlin where he remained for four years. He concluded his university course in 1841 after submitting his thesis on the philosophy of Epicurius. While at Berlin, he was introduced to the writings of G. W. F. Hegel and his theory that ââ¬Å"a thing or thought could not be separated from its opposite.â⬠The anti-religion and anti-autocracy philosophies of Hegel led Marx to join a radical group known as the Young Hegelians3. After graduating from Berlin University, Marx moved to Paris, hoping to become a professor. The Suicide rate in Virginia has been continually rising. In 2011/2012 it was reported that the suicide rate reached an all time high at 13 Suicides in one year. This has been the highest number of suicides in Virginia for almost a decade. According to the States Medical Examiner Office, Virginians' are three times more likely to die from a Suicide then a Homicide.The Medical Examiner's Office said that the stress of Unemployment, elationship problems, and the lack to access Mental Health Resources all played a part in the rising Suicide numbers. Suicide is the act of a person taking His or Her own Life. Who is more likely to commit suicide in prison males or Females? Is there a way that we can prevent Suicide? Suicide can be prevented; most people who commit Suicide do show signs of constant stress and frustration or Depression. In 2007 the Number of People who died from Suicide was 34,598. 395,320 people were treated in emergency departments for self inflicting Injuries. The numbers of attempted suicides are always higher than suicide, it is estimated that there are 25 attempted suicides for every suicide. Females from Virginia reported that they had Mental Health Disorders more than Males.For Males that's not good because reporting that you have a Mental health Disorder means that you actually went to get help and receive treatment, and when it comes to that females seek help more than Males. Medical Examiner's Office 2008) In 2007 the CDC (Center of Disease Control) in Virginia conducted a survey to Measure attitudes regarding Mental Health Issues. 90% of Virginians agreed with the statement ââ¬Å"Treatment can help person s who have Mental Illnessesâ⬠. Only 54% Virginians agreed with the statement ââ¬Å"People are caring and sympathetic to others that has a Mental Disorder.Suicide can be prevented we just have be willing to be more caring and concerned about people who has Mental Disorders. Between 2008 and 2011 there were 4,344 Suicide Deaths in a 5-Year Suicide rate of 1 1. 4 per 100,000 people Population in Virginia. Suicide was the 7th leading cause of Death in Virginia. (Virginia Health Department2008) During this Period of time the leading Mechanism of committing Suicide was Firearms (57. 3%) The second leading Mechanism was Suffocation (18. 6%). The rest of Mechanisms of fall (1 . 73%), Drowning (1. 38%), (1. 5%) of suicides were by other means.Virginians of the age 30 and older has the highest rate of Suicide; the suicide rate for people 35 and older was 18. 6 per 100,000. The second age group that had the Highest Suicide rate was youth 15-25 years old. Youth from the age 15-25 years ol d had a Suicide rate of 15. 5 per 100,000. In 2004 to 2008 there were a total of 3,420 Suicides, so from 2008 to 2011 the amounts of Suicides increased over a thousand. The Male Suicide rate was 17. per 100,000; the Female Suicide rate was 5. 2 per 100,000. The leading cause of Suicide for males was the use of Firearms. Out of all the Males that committed Suicide63. 5% of them used Firearms to commit Suicide. For Females the leading cause of Suicide was Poisoning, 38. 8% of females that committed Suicide did it by poisoning their selves. The Suicide rate for race varies but no race significantly outweighs the other. Even though the Suicide rate for Caucasians in Virginia are higher than the other races in Virginia, the Suicide rate in Virginia for a Caucasian person rate is only 2. times higher than African American person in Virginia. Suicide is the Leading Cause of Death for Inmates in Custody. In 2009 303 Inmates died due to the action of Suicide. The total Number of Suicides in prison for both Male and Females is 2,894. Sadly the Total number of Suicides for Male Inmates was 2,661, and for Female inmates were 232. Why do Male Inmates commit suicide ore than Female Inmates? There are more male Inmates than Female Inmates. In 2009 the males made up most of the Jail Population, 88% percent of the Jail population was males.Suicide rates in Jail have decreased every year 2008-2011. The Suicide rate went from 49 Deaths per 100,000 to 36 Deaths per 100,000. The male suicide rate was 43 per 100,000 Inmates in custody, and the Female Inmate rate was 12 deaths per 100,000. Though There More males in Prison that Females why is a Male 3 times more likely to commit suicide? When being Incarcerated Female Inmates receive more constant therapy and counseling than Male Inmates. In 1993 the BOP(Board of prisons) developed a special program for Female Inmates .This is special help for Female Inmates and its mainly used for them because its proven that a Female is 5 times less likely to commit a violent crime than a Male. This program is almost like a second chance in life. (U. S. Department of Justice Programs2009) When a Female is arrested and charged for a crime, their time to serve and sentence is lenient when compared to Males. During Incarceration Female Inmates receive Educational and Recreation programs. They also are given an opportunity to take Job Training and programs to assist Female Inmates to be better Woman, This as implemented by the U.S Department of Labor. The BOP offers Females Inmates the best Rehabilitation programs possible. Female Inmates apprenticeship programs offer special classes that give Females an opportunity to pick up a Trade. There are up to 40 different Trade programs for Female Inmates. The BOP also has special Mental Health Disorder Programs for Female Inmates. Remember Mental Health In 1994 A sheriff by the Name of Jim Pendegraph made a commitment to improve the treatment Programs for Male Inmates. These programs are supposed to help Male Inmates and address the reason why they are incarcerated.These Programs include Therapeutic, educational and Literacy Programs, While Incarcerated Male Inmates who are eligible may be allowed to receive treatment. This isn't a Law Implemented by the BOP though, this is something a Local Sheriff came up with to better the Community. It is known that while in Prison Females receive more treatment and better opportunities to better themselves than Males. Female Inmates also receive More Therapy for Mental Health Disorders than Males. Because of the advantages that Female Inmates have over Male Inmates this is the reason why Males commit Suicide More than Females.In Society period Males commit Suicide more than Females, because Females get treated more for their Mental Health Disorders that Males. When a Female has a Mental Health Disorder she is m ore likely to report it and attempt to receive Help. Males don't report the fact that they have mental issues and this risk factor is the main reason Males commit Suicide more than Females.
